James P. Masters

November 30, 1934 ~ October 26, 2021 (age 86)

James Philip Masters Sr., 86, of Tinley Park, IL (formerly of Lansing, IL) passed away peacefully in Munster, IN on Tuesday, October 26. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Nancy (Geringer) Masters, and his three sons, James Jr., Michael and Daniel.

Jim Sr. is also survived by his brother, Thomas H. Masters, of Merrillville, IN, and his seven grandsons: Evan, Andrew, Ethan, Justin, Jason, Ryan and Seth. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Victor Masters and Susan (Hoban) Masters.

Jim Sr. was born on November 30, 1934, growing up in the south Chicago area, graduating from Leo High School in 1952 and attending the University of Illinois. For decades, he was employed by the Charles Ringer Co. in Chicago, leading its insurance business and serving as the company’s vice president for many years. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, achieving the rank of sergeant.

Enjoying trips abroad, Jim Sr. and Nancy traveled to many European cities, including Rome, London, Dublin and Paris, and through China and other exotic locales. He enjoyed watching Chicago pro sports teams compete, especially the Chicago Bears, and was a huge fan of Notre Dame football — purchasing tickets for his sons and grandsons so they could all attend games together. He also enjoyed attending his sons’ and grandsons’ sporting events and other school-related activities.

Jim Sr. was a big proponent of college education and was proud that his sons attained university degrees and went on to successful careers in their chosen fields.

Those who knew Jim Sr. best will remember him for his jovial personality and humorous choice of words intended to gain a chuckle and lighten the mood. He was unique in his “lexicon,” and for that trait, the love of his family notwithstanding, he will be missed the most.

Viewing for Jim Sr. will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 4 at Brady Gill Funeral Home in Tinley Park, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church in Tinley Park. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Alsip, IL.
