Claudia S. Kint

1960 - 2005

Clothing expert had eye for future.

Fashion buyer forecast the trends and had a passion for family, books.

Claudia S. Kint, a senior buyer for Chicago-based Mark Shale stores, had a passion for stylish apparel for career women in their 30s, 40s and 50s with a modern attitude, said Scott Baskin, company president and co-owner.

"The fit was so important, because moms today want to dress more like their daughters than like their mothers," Baskin said. "But it's got to fit them. Their daughter's clothes don't always fit them."

Mrs. Kint, 45, died Saturday, Dec. 24, at home in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood. She was suffering from breast and lung cancer, said her husband, Ron.

Mrs. Kint combined artistic talent with a keen understanding of what the customer wanted, Baskin said. She also was skilled in one of the clothing world's most demanding talents: forecasting the future.

"It means taking pretty fabrics and knowing what the next fashion trend would be way before it ever hits the next fashion pages," Baskin said.

Born Claudia Arnesen in Chicago, she graduated from Barrington High School in 1979 and attended a trade school in Dallas, where she studied clothes merchandising.

She met her husband in 1986 when they both dropped in with friends at a local sports bar to watch the Bears win the Super Bowl, her husband said.

"Our first kiss was when the Bears either scored a touchdown or actually won the game," he said.

Before beginning at Mark Shale in 1996, she worked at Hartmarx Corp. and JG Hook, apparel producers and marketers.

Yet Mrs. Kint's primary focus was on her family, her husband said.

She was active in Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago and was one of the founding members of a book club that tried to instill a love of reading and literature in children, including her sons Jack, 11, Adam, 9, and Kees, 4.

Many of the same adults organized a prayer group that met every Sunday after Mrs. Kint was diagnosed with cancer, her husband said. They prayed for a miracle--healing--but received a different answer.

"One of the women said we may not have gotten a miracle we were praying for, but I think the miracle that actually happened was the relationships and the love that has developed through this prayer group," he said.

Survivors also include her mother, Patricia Arnesen; brothers Craig and Kent Arnesen; and sisters Karen Whiting, Kim Arnesen and Kris Shepherd.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 14 in Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut St., Chicago.

To a true retail buyer that was "never over bought!!".

You had a talent for fashion and cooking, and lovingly raising a remarkable family. You had the strength and courage to tackle anything you set out to do.
